环境科学博士.D. 程序

被录取后,博士生开始工作, with the 程序 Director (Temporary Advisor); Major Professor (Doctoral Committee Chair); 和 论文 Committee Members, 同时攻读博士学位.D. 学位. The initiative in planning the doctoral program, however, must be assumed by the student.

在被录取之后, the 程序 Director will assume the role of temporary advisor for the student until a major professor is selected. The purpose of temporary advisement is to provide the initial guidance the student needs to make a successful start in the program. This arrangement gives the student time to become familiar with departmental faculty 和 the University 和 to explore possible research interests. This time may also be used by a student to identify the faculty members who may be asked to serve on the doctoral committee. Specifically, the temporary advisor will assist students in:

  1. 了解部门期望.
  2. Underst和ing the registration process 和 program operations.
  3. 计划初步的学习计划.
  4. 安排初始课程.
  5. 选择专业教授.

The Major Professor should be selected by the student in consultation with the 程序 Director 和 the College Dean 和 approved by designated school officials by the end of the first semester of study after the completion of prerequisite course work. The Major Professor’s name must be on the published list of 研究生 Professors from the Dean of the College of Science, 工程 & 技术.

  3. Having an active laboratory 和/or field research program.
  4. Having expertise in the area of the Student’s dissertation research.

 

The major professor is certainly the chair of students’ doctoral advisory committee. He/she is the immediate supervisor of the student’s research 和 dissertation activities. Also, he/she has the responsibility for calling required 和 necessary committee meetings. Specifically, the major professor will assist the student in:

  1. Preparing course schedule 和 approving it for each registration period.
  2. Selecting the topic, preparing the proposed research 和 completing the dissertation.
  3. 确定适当的研究需要.
  4. Selecting appropriate members of students’ advisory/doctoral committee.
  5. Resolving conflicts which may arise between committee members 和 students.
  6. Completing 和 filing all 表格及申请 required in earning the 学位.

 

咨询委员会 

After receiving admission to the Division of 研究生 Studies 和 enrolling for graduate studies, the student will consult with the Environmental Science 咨询委员会 concerning appointment of the Chair of the Student’s 咨询委员会.  The Student’s 咨询委员会 will consist of not fewer than four members of the graduate faculty representative of the Student’s several areas of study 和 research. One of the Committee members should not be affiliated with the College of Science, 工程与技术.

The Chair, in consultation with the student, will select the remainder of the 咨询委员会.  No individual located away from the campus may serve as chair of a Student’s 咨询委员会, but may serve as Co-Chair with an individual located on the campus.

The Committee members’ signatures on the approved 学位 program (Form I: Doctoral Degree Plan: To be completed during the first year of full time study) indicate their willingness to accept the responsibility for guiding 和 directing the entire academic program of the student 和 for initiating all academic actions concerning the student.  Although individual committee members may be replaced by petition for valid reasons, 委员会不能集体辞职.  委员会主席, who usually has immediate supervision of the student’s research 和 dissertation has the responsibility for calling required meetings of the committee, 和 for calling meetings at any other time considered desirable.

The duties of the committee include responsibility for the proposed 学位 program, 研究计划, 初审, 论文:研究的论文或记录, 论文答辩(期末考试).  除了, the committees as a group 和 as individual members are responsible for counseling the student on academic matters, 和, 在学术不足的情况下, 向学院院长提出建议
